Celebrating Community with the JOURNEY bar
Posted by Darryl Pike on 4th Nov 2020
As the founder of Jacobean Chocolate and Saltwater Pewter, I’ve spent much of my life celebrating the culture and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador in art. I’ve created chocolate, jewelry, and other crafts to bring people together and remind them of this incredible place we’re all proud to call home.
That’s why I’m proud to announce that I’m launching a new chocolate bar that celebrates community and diversity: the JOURNEY bar. As a way to give back to the community, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to First Light, a non-profit organization that revitalizes, strengthens, and celebrates Indigenous cultures and languages in our province.
For the bar’s design, I’ve collaborated with Emilie Fowler, a rising indigenous visual artist. Emilie and I decided upon using a leatherback turtle to dawn the collaboration bar as it represents movement and life: a free spirit. The leatherback can represent how indigenous people would always be moving. The sea is vast, and the leatherback turtle is free to roam the world, from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere. And swims in and around the oceans of the equatorial Cacao growing regions where they lay their eggs, yet can visit our shores here in Newfoundland. The leatherback sea turtles we have in Newfoundland are the most widely traveled of the seven main types of marine turtles. They live a long life (up to 45 years) and gather much wisdom over that time. They are the part of the “elders of the ocean“ group of mammals.
The eagle feathers across the top are a symbol of truth, power and freedom.
Like every Jacobean chocolate bar, this bar is 100% handcrafted, from bean to bar. With the incredible flavours of Cacao Beans from Vietnam, cane sugar from Brazil, Cocoa butter from Venezuela, and Newfoundland roasted Coffee, we are certain that you will enjoy sharing this bar with friends and family, no matter the occasion.
The new JOURNEY bar is available on our website and at select retail locations like Whink and the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador.
